I love the sun. Giver of life, light and shadows, warmth, solace, power, energy, like the air we breathe, its constant presence in our everyday life is a gift and blessing. I turn my face to the sun on a cold day and revel in its warmth. Watching the interplay of shadows and light as the sun dances across the sky, I see Nature’s art. During the summer growing season, I see the power of the sun firsthand as I watch okra in my garden transition from a tiny nub to a pod worth harvesting, all in one day.
I understand then why the ancients worshipped the sun. I guess I’m a modern-day sun worshipper too, so much so that the idea of powering my home with an energy source that's so authentic, holistic and grounded in clean efficiency, borders on the divine. We haven’t yet invested in solar for our home, for a number of reasons, but hope to one day.
In the meantime, I follow the rapidly emerging solar industry with great interest and hope. In the latest newsletter from the U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy division, a trio of reports from various organizations and institutions illustrate solar energy’s potential and progress ::: New Technologies Show Promise for High-Efficiency Solar Cells
Since solar-generated utility scale power is also progressing rapidly -- to the point that other countries and states are aggressively moving forward with investing in such projects -- could solar be an energy source the powers that be in Oklahoma will eventually consider? Like wind power, Oklahoma ranks high in solar power potential, so why Oklahoma has yet to seriously look at this option, or promote it as an alternative for homeowners, like so many things in our state, remains a mystery to me. Perhaps someone out there has an enlightening insight?
